Plastic electroplating in simple terms.

To begin with, probably the most important question, simply, what is Plastic Electroplating? Well, It’s a manufacturing process that coats plastic parts with a thin layer of metal to make the parts more durable, attractive, and conductive. Also known as electroplating on plastic. This technique combines the lightweight nature of plastic with the desirable properties of metals, such as shine, durability, and conductivity.

Process of electroplating parts.

The process of plastic electroplating parts is pretty simple here at Coler. Starting by preparing the plastic surface. Since this is not naturally conductive, it needs to be treated to adhere to the metal coating. This is typically done by cleaning the plastic thoroughly and then applying a layer of conductive material, often a special paint or a thin layer of metal. Once this is prepared, it is submerged into an electroplating bath. This bath contains a solution of metal ions, such as gold, silver, or nickel. When an electrical current is applied, these metal ions are attracted to the plastic surface, forming a thin and even metallic layer.

3 Advantages of Electroplated Parts

1) Compared to their metal counterparts, electroplated plastic parts offer not only a superb metallic texture but also the benefit of reduced product weight. This process not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of plastic, catering to decorative needs, but also improves its electrical, thermal, and corrosion-resistant properties.

2) Another key advantage of plastic electroplated parts is the durability. Electroplated parts offer exceptional durability, combining the lightweight nature of plastic with the strength and corrosion resistance of metal coatings. This makes them ideal for demanding applications requiring both performance and longevity. For example, automotive parts like dashboard accents, or door handles.

3) A third advantage of using Electroplated parts is the recyclability of the finished products, ensuring that the process is sustainable and beneficial to the environment. Electroplated parts, especially those coated with metals like gold or silver, can be recycled, making them a more sustainable option compared to other materials that are harder to recycle. By incorporating electroplating into the manufacturing process, companies can achieve high-quality, durable, and aesthetically pleasing products while benefiting from cost savings, improved performance, and design flexibility.

3 Disadvantages of Electroplated parts

1) At Coler, we faced a challenge electroplating lightweight lampshades that floated due to their low specific gravity. Initially, we used copper wire to secure the lampshades for electroplating, but gas release caused detachment, and the copper wire wasn’t strong enough. Our solution was to add a heavier object, however, this led to poor conductivity and burns. To resolve this, we designed a unique fixture with wide conductive sheets that keep the lampshade submerged without damaging it.

2) Another disadvantage of Electroplated parts is, that properly preparing the plastic surface is crucial for ensuring a strong bond between itself and the metal. This process often involves cleaning, etching, or activating the plastic, which can be time-consuming and complex. Even with proper preparation, the metal layer may not always adhere well, especially under stress or wear.

3) One final disadvantage of these parts, is the design complexity. Some parts with complex geometries or unusual shapes can be difficult to electroplate evenly. Areas that are hard to access or contain undercuts may not receive uniform metal coating, leading to potential performance or aesthetic issues, which leads to the finished product not being satisfactory.
